Of pearls and crystals - the ZAGU wave
Do you recall the days when it seemed that every corner of the city had this sign?

One such sign beckoned to me on a particularly hot night. Enticing… inviting… I was being pulled to experience the chill… the tangy… the taste of what the popularly call “pearls”.. and what I and my generation used to call “sago”.
As we approach the summer season, these beverages will again be a staple in our lives.
I looked at the list of variants that were available (as it had been years since I last bought a Zagu) and I was frozen for a minute in front of the store’s window because the choices on their menu didn’t quite register on my brain.
Here are some of the flavors that they had on their list:
I was stuck. All I wanted was a good old ripe mango shake.
Oooh there it is… finally I found the name it went by - Natural Mango (with extra Pearls of course!)
The tallest sized drink cost me about P50. Not bad.
The drink came with a pressure-sealed plastic cup and a thick straw - thick enough for the big round pearls to swish through.
Even though the drink cannot hide the fact that the flavor came from “fruit concentrates”, I still enjoyed the pearls and the tangy taste that came with such concentrates. Plus, faced with a very humid evening ahead - who could say no to a refreshing drink.
After having my fill of the Natural Mango Zagu - I have to say, Im glad I have access to a fresh fruit shake establishment that assures me of the freshness of the drink that is being served.
I have nothing against making shakes this way - but I still prefer those that make you think of those that mom used to make back home.

hi! this is not related to your post. this is just to inform you that your blog has been added to the pinoy bloggers directory. tnx
Thanks!
i agree that zagu and its kind are not good for ones health. calling their stuff natural is a direct insult of one’s thinking capabilities. i prefer the quickly shakes, as well as the more economical fruitas (i only saw two kiosks, one in the Hub in Crossing and I forgot the second one.
and creme brulee is an old flavor. i think i had it when zagu and orbitz was still a fad. darn, im old…
ciao!
@Erin
- Ditto! I have never tasted quickly - ever. I always heard of “taro” flavor and thought that was all they had so I never tried it. I like fruitas too although they use frozen fruits. The best for me is still Big Chill. Hmm…:)
super taro is my favorite. there is one quickly shop in enterprise so you might want to try it the next time you are there. just steer away from the chocolate-themed taro offerings and you will be fine. i had to finish my wife’s order one time and it was not the quickly experience i would want to revisit again.
big chill is too expensive for my taste wallet. but then again you and chris dine on the mid-to-high end sites.
ciao!
@Erin
- Super Taro? Isnt Taro…? Big Chill is expensive? Naguilty naman ako… P40 for the jumbo watermelon is my favorite especially on very hot days…
supertaro is quickly’s “with everything on it” offering. all those yummy and colorful taro puddings. hmmn, ill try to find somebody who will eat in enterprise later…
Php40 for a cooler is not bad. i was thinking of the php75 and above offerings. Php55 is my limit for a relatively large sized drink. unless if its free.
ciao!
got so hooked on Zagu when it was new pa! Melon or Creme Brulee w/ pearls and extra crystal for me
u8mypinkcookies - Zagu is already too artificial for me to try Creme Brulee.
Have any of you tried stuffed breadsticks from Zagu? I’m telling you it’s really good!
Jeffrey - stuffed breadsticks?! I’ll check them out next time. This is the first time I have heard they served this. Thanks for the tip!
