An inch short of a fantasy vacation

Last weekend, our team went on our annual summer outing. As most other companies do, a beach resort almost always is involved in the trip.

I am not here though to share with you the bikini lines, the sunburns, the ocean blue or the white sand of the resort that we went to. I would rather share an interesting experience with the food that was served to us by the resort.

First let me tell you that although they offered us a corporate package, the rates that the resort has is very very much expensive. We agreed to pay for a corporate package meal of P1,350 for lunch, pm snack, dinner, breakfast and am snack for an overnight stay at the resort. Normally, we wouldnt mind as we have never stayed at a resort that did not provide scrumptous food that are also often served in abundance (most offer a buffet meal at that price).

The main meals included an appetizer or soup, main dish, and dessert. Good deal right? You would think… but read on so I can change your mind.

We arrived at the resort to have lunch, famished after having travelled for 3 long hours. We were served everything they advertised - corn soup, fried chicken and sweetened corn porridge for dessert. Normal eh? I dont have pictures of that meal so let me move on.

For dinner, we had several choices so we all took one of the choices so that we could get a taste of everything. The appetizer that was served consisted of very thin slivers of green mango mixed with what appears to be onion slices. The mango strips looked like something that would be used as decoration instead of to eat. Then the main dish was served. I gulped. My husband gulped. Everyone else did. My first thought was - “ganyan ba kahirap bumili ng bigas dito?” (is it that hard to buy rice here?). The portion of rice that was served was not what one would consider as one cup of rice - the normal serving. It is not even what you would call half-rice. The portion was not even enough for my 4-year old kid! See for yourself:

liempo

The picture above is the grilled liempo. See the rice? Tsk tsk. Another dish served was the pinaputok na tilapia (fish). Again - check out the rice on that plate. Geesh!

We were on vacation and really most of the time you get an excuse to set aside your diet and eat a full cup of rice (Im not dieting so I was on the losing end of this deal). We then ordered extra rice as we really were still hungry. We were served extra rice alright - at the same serving that was in the dish! And it costs P30! Talk about highway robbery! Cant imagine what Im saying? Then look at the next picture.

More pictures here…. and I do not have to say more to confirm that my family and I and most of my officemates had a lousy time with the food that was served. The place was ok for a beach resort but for a place that forbids you to bring your own food except for chips - it failed miserably as a vacation destination. And my family did not want to ever go back there again.

Tsk tsk. Sometimes the food that you serve is the clincher to marking your destination as simply memorable. Sometimes its all about the food.
