Roti Mum coffeebun
I was walking around the mall when I smelled something good. It was past noon and my stomach was growling. Did it smell good because I had not eaten anything at all that day?
Then I chanced upon a bread store which was bright with orange lights and orange decor. I saw trays upon trays upon trays of large round dough. Hmm… I feel like having coffee all of a sudden.
I read the name of the store and I got all excited. Coffee buns. Roti Mum coffee buns. Such a warming thought.
I first tasted the coffee bun from a piece my officemate was eating a couple of weeks ago. It was bought from another store. Being a coffee lover, bread lover and basically a food lover, I was instantly attracted to the comforting feeling that the bun gave me.
I walked in the store and was filled with the scent of mocha. It filled my nostrils and exploded in my lungs. I wanted to just keep inhaling all the delicious odors.
I bought 4 buns to take home with me. Although I wanted to eat them right there and then, I had to restrain myself because I still had some errands to run.
Because it took some time for me to get home, I decided to heat the buns as directed in the paper bags that housed them.
My husband’s head turned when he noticed the smell emanating from the toasting bun. “Ang sarap naman nyan” (that smells good). He found it so good that he just had to eat the first one that came out of the toaster… Huhuhu….
It’s a good thing I bought four, otherwise none would be left for me.
The coffee bun is best hot. Not warm - hot. You see inside the bun is yellow creamy butter. Heating the bun will further melt the butter inside which will make it spread everywhere. The top is coated with what you would imagine meringue to be - sugar icing that is not too sweet. Although this one covers the bun thinly that it complemented the soft bread inside by being the crunchy coat that held everything together.
One bun is already very filling for one meal… although I had two (I was hungry!). But the taste will make you forget how many you have actually consumed. Its so delicious, you just keep eating and eating and eating.
One tip though - do not break it into bite size pieces. You just might eat more than one.

Delifrance makes good coffeebuns too.
Em Dy - Yes, I have also tried theirs. I guess the advantage that Roti Mum has over Delifrance is that Roti sells coffee buns that are fresh off the oven while Deli’s have them stocked and just heat it for you.
…if you’re ever in the US…you simply must have premium connoisseur peaberry coffee with your coffee buns…;-)

ever since i tasted my first coffee bun from Michelle’s bakery in SM Pampanga. i never expected that i would get to find one here in Manila that makes them. I went to Roti Mum and tried their famous coffee buns. I was surprised that it’s more expensive than the one at Michelle’s. Roti Mum or Michelle’s Bakery for coffee buns? I would have to say Michelle’s. Too bad, there is no Michelle’s Bakery here in Manila. If there is, please… I can’t get enough of them.
i love Michelle’s coffee buns for the taste.
Lee - Aww… too bad Michelle’s is far out in Pampanga. Maybe when we go on our next driving trip we will mark it as a place to visit.
haven’t tried Roti Mum’s.. but I love Delifrance’s coffee buns!
u8mypinkcookies - If you love Delifrance’s, you will absolutely love Roti Mum. Yummy.
in the philippines, rotimum is the closest you could get to an authentic coffee bun. i have tried rotiboy and papa roti in singpore some years back but i still think roti mum tastes better. delifrance makes good coffee buns too although i think it would pale in comparisson with roti mum. as for michelle’s which caught my curiosity a few months back, hygiene is a huge issue. a colleague brought back 5 buns only to find out, 4 of the buns had flies on them. maybe management should be more strict with their crew.
i heard that rotimum just launched a new flavour, chocolate. ill try them and will let you know if they’re good.
noke - Ewww. That is an awful experience. Tsk tsk. I feel bad for places that have great tasting food but fare poorly in cleanliness. Chocolate Roti Mum????!!! I better go back to get some. Thanks for the tip!
my kids love the choco buns. the choco flavour was obvious albeit quite soft which made those choco buns mysteriously interesting. taste is relative. and so i still go for the classic coffee buns. choco buns for my kids, coffee buns for me and my wifey.we all went home very satisfied.
noke - I still havent tried the chocolate buns and Im so craving for it. I hope I can pass by Megamall this weekend. Yummmy!
[...] confirmed it. I tasted bread. You might argue that donuts fall in the same category as bread or buns but I would have to disagree. Personally, I think donuts should be light and airy, mostly sweet or [...]
[...] Roti Mum - the famous coffee bun from Singapore. I had the opportunity to fall in love with this coffee bun last year. A couple of months ago, I heard that they were now serving choco buns. Hmm… [...]
I had my first taste of Roti Mum a few years back, and I must say, once you’ve tasted it, one piece is just not enough to satify your desire for more. I had the whole family “hooked on” to it in no time. Mmmmm… fabulous !!!!
sweet tooth - Im glad more and more people like it. It give the owners an opportunity to expand and maybe they will open one near where I work so I dont have to go to megamall everytime.
Delifrance’s coffee bun is really good especially for takeaway for those merienda breaks at work! It gives off an enticing aroma when I sink my teeth for the first bite… and taste the buttery surprise at the bottom. It’s soo yummy. I actually like it better than Roti Mum’s because it’s so easily available in Makati. I rarely go to Mega or Mall of Asia anyway.
krismae - I think distance makes for a good reason to choose one product over another. That is also the reason why I do not always get to eat Roti Mum as I do not frequent Megamall.
