Potato corner is now using turbo broiler

I know very few people who do not like french fries. Even those I know hate potatoes, say that french fries are the exception for them. French fries is one of those that actually differentiates McDonalds from Jollibee. I love McDonalds fries!

Potato Corner was the first french fry stall that offered flavored french fried potatoes. I am now imagining sour cream and onion flavored fries. Yummy! I never let myself pass by Potato corner without buying large fries.

One time while grocery shopping at SM Hypermart at C5 Pasig City, we decided to buy ourselves a big bucket of fries from Potato corner. I approached the stall and was preparing myself to be hit by intense heat from the very hot oil used in frying the potatoes.

I was surprised to feel no heat. I was surprised that no smoke was coming out of the stall. I initially thought it was because there were no customers yet but it was not that. I did not immediately recognize the contraption that was on the counter but I realized there was no deep fryer. The lady saw me staring and went on to explain that instead of frying they cooked the fries inside the turbo broiler. I was too shocked to retract my payment and leave. I did not want turbo broiler-ed fries. I wanted deep fried, dark brown and steamy hot fries!

True enough, the result from turbo broiling the frozen fries was a pale chunk of potato sticks that was dipped in cheese (which was good to hide the pallid color). There was no crunch, no browning, no hint of the fried taste that I love. It tasted similar to how it looked. Go figure.

its idiotic since it is named “french fries” and not “french broiled”.

i stopped patronizing potato corner for more than 4 years now. the quality just wasn’t the same when it first started. sour cream was my favorite but the artificial flavoring was becoming too msg-like for my taste.

    ciao!

No more good ol’ crispy fries? What are they thinking??
    I want my fries FRIED!

Erin - Haha. My thoughts too! And yes I also noticed how the quality has changed and I blame that on franchising. I still come back to the stall in Robinson’s Galleria. Its been there since.. forever. :)

u8mypinkcookies - Yung sa glorietta ata deep fried pa rin parehas ng sa Galleria. Baka the turbo broiler thing applies to new franchises. Sayang talaga. Hay.

it is too bad when childhood memories are not lived up to. I hate when that happens!

It is not the new franchises. It is because of SM because they do not alow fryers in these type of stalls.

Potato Corner - That’s really interesting. It must only be in this particular SM mall as they do have fryers at SM Megamall. And it really sucks that they dont fry the potatoes and I’ll bet it ruins sales too. Tsk tsk.

or…i believe the turbo broilers are upon specification by the franchisee. standard for potato corner is still the deep fryer :)

    i love their hash brown!

vina - i just hope they realize its not a good idea if they want to attract customers.. :)

[...] The fries tasted like the frozen one I buy at the grocery for my kids or those that are cooked by Potato Corner using a turbo broiler. The saving grace of this dish is the chicken. It was fried crisp and salty and doused with chili [...]

I love Potato Corner. But just yesterday, I had a bad experience on this Potato Corner branch. You can check out on my bad experience on
    http://tsinay.blogsome.com/2008/04/19/beware-of-this-potato-corner-cart/

By the way, the branch is not using turbo broiler like other branch. Now, I am checking on how to contact Potato Corner main branch.

It was my first time in SM HYPERMART Pasig and I saw Potato Corner.
I love french fries specially the sour cream flavor…yum-yum,
Even if it cooked in turbo broiler its still taste good…
after all, cooked it in turbo broiler is good for your health because of there’s no oil.
Specially for those health conscious like me…
Thanks to Potato Corner that they have an outlet in SM Hypermart Pasig because
my kids love Fries and at least di na kami lalayo pa ng malls kasi malapit lang kami roon.
    KEEP IT UP YO!

foodlover - I can understand how the health conscious will be able to appreciate the turbo broiled fries but for myself - I still prefer deep fried to the max. :D
