Cello’s Doughnuts and Dips

You might shoot me if I admit that I have never heard of Cello’s doughnuts until now (ducking quickly). It was a good thing that their boxes were designed to be bright orange that when a colleague at work was carrying these orange boxes, I immediately asked what goodies were inside.

cellos

The orange box revealed a variety of yummy looking doughnuts that I have never seen before. I think she noticed how my drool was dripping over her dessert so she offered me a donut. I excitedly reached out to pick myself a donut that was not plain or chocolate. I chose a doughnut topped with blueberry and drizzled with what looked like cheese.

I turned the large ring around to take in the sight of the pastry. Most donuts are usually browned as a result of deep frying. This donut was not. It was pale but packed. I wondered about the color for a while but let it go as it did not make the donut look unappetizing. It just made it unfamiliar.

The taste that came after the first bite was unexpected. The second bite confirmed it. I tasted bread. You might argue that donuts fall in the same category as bread or buns but I would have to disagree. Personally, I think donuts should be light and airy, mostly sweet or even creamy. They should not taste like your good ol’ buns.

blueberry

The blueberry topping was the one that gave the sweetness to it but the drizzle of cheese took it back. To me, it just didn’t work.

I would have loved to try the chocolate variety so I could find out if they would provide more of the pastry I am looking for. Since their branches are located far from where I usually am (at Taft and Katipunan), it might take a while before I can change how I see cello’s donuts now.

Ciao!

The first time I tried them, I expected the usual light donuts as well. But Cello’s donuts are apparently “cake” donuts! I like them, they’re different, something unique in the donut world. :)

I’ve been dying to taste their doughnuts but their location is too far from makati. I hope I can pass by their place one of these days. =)

kimsan23 - Now that makes sense! So maybe I should change my mindset when I eat these donuts so I am not disappointed.

Hi Dine! Ya I saw your article. I will give it another shot and try the chocolate ones next time. I may have a different view then. Cheers!

We have something similar here…J&Co donuts and Big Apple donuts. Basically, the donuts are creatively drizzled with any and every flavours imaginable. There’s one with cheese, durian filing, jam, coffee etc. I liked the one with white choc and almond and the one with choc rice bubbles. I find the rest either too sweet or too weird to my taste.

My Bug Life - I would be ok with jam, coffee (or rather mocha), white chocolate and some other fruit filling. But durian? Umm… I cannot imagine. :) But that’s me.

I agree that donuts should be light, but I’m willing to try this, perhaps with the mindset that i’m eating a bun. Next time that I’ at Katipunan, I might just try this. Thanks for the introduction! :)

Hey, there’s also Cello’s at Greenhills. I love the strawberry, chocnut oreo and chocolate. It’s not Krispy Kreme but I love their donuts.

James - Greenhills is nearer to where I live so maybe I will get to try it more often. Thanks!

[...] with icing - preferably chocolate. I know that I had tried eclairs sold by other stores like the local donut shops but I did not like the filling that they would use which would often be the famous Bavarian cream. [...]

mayeth - That is one of the unfortunate things about cello’s. Many people love them but the stores are really too far away. :(
